Narberth Junior Legion 2010
Welcome/Background
The following info is being provided to player/families who may be interested in learning more about the Narberth Jr Legion Baseball program for summer 2010. Please pass this on to others who may be interested.
The Jr Legion baseball program in Narberth is sponsored by the Harold D. Speakman Post 356 in Narberth and Narberth Athletic Association. The team competes in the Main Line Jr Legion Baseball League against 8 other teams including: Aston, Delaware-Valley, Glenolden, Haverford, Nether-Providence, Roxborough, Springfield and Wayne. The Jr Legion Team is composed of 14 and 15 yr old boys (cannot turn 16 prior to May 1, 2010). NAA guidelines suggest an eighteen-person roster and Legion guidelines limit the Jr Legion roster to a maximum of twelve 15yr olds, essentially leaving room for six 14 yr olds. There will also be a Narberth Sandlot Legion team for 14yr olds.
Geographic Territory
The PA Legion rules stipulate that each team can only draw from a total population of 44,000. Lower Merion Twp has close to 66,000 residents. Over the past few years, certain census tracts within LMT have been removed from the Narberth Legion geographic territory. This may have a bearing on a player’s eligibility to play for the Narberth Jr Legion team, but may not have a bearing on the Sandlot team. Please contact me at the email below with your address if you have a question regarding your eligibility.
Tryouts
All interested players will have an opportunity to try out for the team at three player evaluations to be held at the Narberth baseball field: Sunday April 11th, Sunday April 18th and Sunday April 25th. All to be held from 430p to 630p. The tryouts are meant to be successive with cuts made after each one. Players should bring their own equipment. All 14-15yr olds will be evaluated together. The Jr Legion roster will be established alongside the Sandlot team. The competition for these roster places will be very competitive and there are no pre-determinations.
Schedule
Once the team has been selected, the Jr Legion schedule will build off progress that players will have made for their spring school teams. Practices will begin for Legion in early May primarily on weekends to avoid school ball conflicts. Two exhibition, non-league tournaments are scheduled: May 15-16 in Aberdeen MD and May 29-30 in Radnor PA. The first League game will be on May 22/23 then continue after Memorial Day with 2-3 games per week until June 30. The regular season is composed of 16 games, playing each opponent twice. A double elimination playoff will occur during the first two weeks of July, concluding by July 16. The top two teams in our League will advance to the State Regionals to be held July 24-27.
Commitment
Past seasons have proven that making this team is an accomplishment in itself within a talented and well-balanced Main Line League. Last year, 5-6 teams competed for playoff positions until the last week of the season. We will likely carry a roster of 18, with balanced playing time in non-league tourneys and talent-based rosters increasingly employed throughout the regular season and into the playoffs. Player commitment and desire to contribute on all levels will be important to the team’s success, while the roster size will allow for some players to jointly participate in other baseball endeavors.
The cost per player will be $225. due upon being chosen to the team, and before a uniform is issued. An additional fee of approximately $50 will be required for the Aberdeen tourney in late May. We are grateful for the overall support of the Harold D. Speakman Post 356 in Narberth and the Narberth Athletic Association.
Coaches
At the Jr Level, I will be joined by Mark Morris, Jon Rubin and Larry Shane. The coaches have been preparing since fall for this season and eagerly await the snow to vanish and the friendly confines of Narberth field to return to playable conditions.
